  • Where: Southeast of Lake Naivasha, in Kenya’s Rift Valley

  • Type: Stratovolcano with a massive caldera (8 x 12 km)

  • Elevation: 2,776 meters (9,108 feet)

  • Formation: Created by eruptions of trachytic lava around 21,000 years ago

  • The crater floor is covered by a forest of small trees

  • Steam vents dot the crater walls

  • Wildlife includes buffaloes, antelopes, and various bird species
